Located in Nanshan District, Shenzhen, Nantou Ancient City was founded in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, boasting a history of nearly 1,700 years. Known as the “root of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Culture”, it once served as an administrative center, Coastal defense fortress and commercial hub in Lingnan, now reborn as a cultural landmark integrating history and modernity after protection and renovation.

Historical relics are the soul of the Ancient City. The well-preserved South Gate, built in 1394 during the Ming Dynasty, features the seal script “Ningnan” on its archway, telling stories of time. The reconstructed Xin’an County Government inherits Lingnan architectural aesthetics, recreating ancient administrative scenes. Dongguan Guild Hall, the only surviving guildhall in Shenzhen, witnesses the trade exchanges between Hong Kong and Shenzhen in the Qing Dynasty.

Trendy elements and daily vitality breathe new life into the Ancient City. The Narrow Hotel designed by Shuhei Aoyama creates a unique accommodation experience in a narrow space. Tiered Garden and Bamboo Garden combine modern design with nature, becoming popular photo spots. Cultural and creative shops are scattered along the streets: Zizai Typography Museum offers traditional movable type printing experiences, while Super Vinyl Factory combines a record store with a café for a cozy time.
Local delicacies are not to be missed. Deng’s traditional Pastry Shop serves intangible cultural heritage glutinous rice cakes. Jiujie Roast Meat offers authentic Cantonese roasted pork and goose. The century-old Jinjiang Restaurant retains classic Cantonese dim sum. Easily accessible via Metro Line 12 (Nantou Ancient City Station, Exit D), it’s recommended to visit on weekdays morning to enjoy the unique charm of the integration of past and present.
