Deep in the urban village of Liutang Community, Bao’an District, Shenzhen, lies a century-old building known as the “Distressed Princess” — Liutang Watchtower (Jinji Courtyard). Constructed in the 1930s by an overseas Chinese surnamed Liu from Singapore who engaged in real estate, this building was not only a “mansion” in the Republic of China era but also a vivid witness to Shenzhen’s modern overseas Chinese history.

As an immovable cultural relic in Bao’an District, Jinji Courtyard is a model of integrated Sino-Western architecture. Its beige exterior exudes Nanyang romance, with Baroque archways paired with traditional Chinese green glazed tiles. Exquisite stucco decorations such as tassels, grain crops and five-pointed stars adorn the walls. The “swallow’s nest” defensive structures at the rear corners and the dome pavilion on the roof balance living comfort with bandit-proof observation functions, showcasing the aesthetics and wisdom of overseas Chinese at that time.
After nearly a century of vicissitudes, Jinji Courtyard was once occupied as a Japanese army headquarters, confiscated and turned into a rental house, yet it still retains its unique charm. Now surrounded by dense residential buildings, the weeds on the roof and air conditioners create a wonderful blend of retro and urban life. It’s free to visit 24 hours a day, perfect for travelers who love off-the-beaten-path historical buildings and atmospheric photography.
